Wrist Pain With Push Ups & Handstands Is Fixable

Your wrist pain should not stop you from doing exercises you enjoy!

The video above addresses one specific potential cause for wrist pain with push ups and handstands: improper gliding of the bones (carpal bones) within the wrist joint.

Why Do I Have Wrist Pain?

When you do exercises like push ups or handstands, your wrist is forced into significant extension range of motion (lots of bending). Wrist extension requires space to open up in the back of the joint (posterior aspect of the wrist need space). If that space is not available, it causes a binding sensation (pain) and actual binding biomechanics.

What Can I Do To Fix My Wrist Pain?

To coax the carpal bones of your wrist to move properly, they sometimes need specifically applied pressure to guide them to move better. Thus, the use of a narrow but strong rubber band is often helpful to optimize biomechanics.

Firm but comfortable posterior pressure to the carpal bones will glide the bones forward (anteriorly) out of the way. This will open up your wrist for closed chain drills like push ups and handstands.

You may need to use the rubber band assist for several weeks worth of push up and handstand related exercises. Typically, the carpal bones “get used” to moving better so you won’t have to use the rubber band assist forever.
